2002 Arizona Toxophilite award

April 6, 2003

The Arizona State Archery Association (Arizona component of the National Archery Association) is proud to select its Toxophilite (or “Archery Bow Lover”) award in recognition of the men and women that have made a significant contribution to target archery in Arizona.

This years recipients are Janice Price and Mike Koistinen.  These two did not accomplish such great things alone.  Quiet and dependable volunteers are the key to the success.   We applaud them for taking the bull by the horns.

Janice Price is a wonderful example of volunteerism for the Arizona JOAD community.  She hosts the Arizona JOAD Association website and acts as the secretary for AZJOAD.  She can be credited with keeping track of the Arizona JOAD’s modern records and an unofficial set of the modern NAA JOAD Championship and NAA Target National JOAD records.

A notable achievement was the very successful, 2002 Duel in the Desert Trials and Duel in the Desert Tournament.  There, Janice raised the bar for Arizona tournaments to follow by providing the theme of the AZ boot and Boot hill, AZJOAD fundraiser raffle and tournament music.  Janice can usually be found among those working the scoring laptop computer at most of the ASAA/AZJOAD events. Also, keeping busy at tournaments stops Janice from offering parental advise to her archer daughter, Lindsay.  (A hint to most parents)

Mike Koistinen is also the 1999 Toxophilite award winner.  In 2000 and 2001 years Mike declined consideration for the honor in an effort to spread the credit around.  This year Mike forgot to decline and the Arizona State Archery Association community was quick to honor Mike again.

Mike’s tireless work includes hosting the Arizona State Outdoor Championship as well as the world famous Arizona Cup.  (This year the AZ Cup has a registration of approximately 300 archers with representatives from nine countries.)

The award is not only to recognize Mike, but also his family and friends that form an army of Arizona Target Archery volunteers that unselfishly give of their personal time for the benefit of the “archers”.

Mike Koistinen is the long time President of the Arizona State Archery Association and is the glue that keeps the whole thing together.  His experience is a resource that most other State Archery Associations would love to have.

Congratulations, Janice and Mike, for doing what you do so well for the greater good of Arizona Target Archery.  We couldn’t have done it without you both.
